Bitchin Bajas - Live at the Empty Bottle, Chicago, IL

Digging into this Chicago instrumental trio — a side project of Cooper Crain of Cave — this morning. Bitchin’ is right! Some great Frippertronics-y stuff happening in this vid. Check out their Soundcloud page for more. Apparently a full album coming out on Drag City sometime this year?

Distant Correspondent :: “Listen”
One more thing to check out over at Aquarium Drunkard — this very nice collab between Edith Frost and members of Goes Cube and Meanwhile Back In Communist Russia. Mentioned ‘em a little while back, now you can hear “Listen.” And I apologize for using the adjective “wintery” to describe music that involves Edith Frost. You’ve probably already realized this, but I am what is known in the writing world as a total hack.

Martin Rev :: s/t
More Aquarium Drunkard stuff — I wrote a little bit about this excellent reish of Suicide instrumentalist Martin Rev’s 1980 debut. You can also check out an mp3 of the quite lovely opening track, “Mari.”

Neil Halstead - Fuel/Friends Chapel Session, October 17, 2012
Live in Denver, CO. My wife loves this dude, so I’ve heard his new one (and everything else) a bunch — good stuff!

Codona - 9/13/78 + Old and New Dreams - 7/8/80
Just going to keep directing you over to the ever-reliable Infinite Fool, who has shared two essential Don Cherry-related items: a cosmic Codona show, featuring Cherry, Collin Walcott and Nana Vasconcelos; and an Old and New Dreams broadcast, with Cherry and his fellow Ornette sidemen, Charlie Haden, Ed Blackwell and Dewey Redman. Oh and you can still grab this other Codona show. Feel the Eternal Rhythm!

Dead C / Rangda (split)
An inspired pairing of these experimental rock titans, out next month on Ba Da Bing Records. Rangda’s two tracks are new recordings, with plenty of that marvelous, tangle-y Bishop/Corsano/Chasny interplay, while the Dead C’s sludge-tastic contributions come from the EUSA Kills sessions. Dig one of those here.

Donald Byrd
A couple of nice tributes to the recently departed Donald Byrd — a previously unreleased live gig from 1973 and a two-part Gilles Peterson mix covering both the trumpeter’s acoustic and electric years. The live show is particularly fun, as Byrd and band give the creamy Black Byrd material an altogether more aggressive treatment. It’s not exactly On The Corner, but occasionally it leans in that direction.

Van Morrison - 10/9/70, Fillmore West, San Francisco, CA (sbd)
Another great early Van show via Infinite Fool. Particularly interesting is the lengthy, rarely played “Astral Weeks.” Venture in the slipstream, my friends!

COMP TOGETHER: ILX Covers The Beatles
You can get another taste of my new band, Forces At Work, on this new compilation of Beatles covers from the ILX universe. Our Faux Fab tune is a woozy interpretation of “Tomorrow Never Knows.” It came out pretty OK! But definitely check out the rest, including a hypnotic “Long Long Long,” a Super Mario-ized take on “Strawberry Fields Forever,” and a downright amazing “Within You Without You.” I think that last one might indeed be Better Than The Beatles.

Early Adopters
In my ongoing quest to bring you every last bit of Velvet Underground ephemera, here’s a cool mix of VU covers that were recorded during the band’s initial lifetime, 1967-1970. Some awesome interpretations here, as well as a handful of bands who (coincidentally?) took on the name The Velvet Underground back then. Let’s get ephemeral! Thanks to Phil Milstein for compiling.
covers of VU material during VU lifetime: 1. Banana: There She Goes Again 2. David Bowie: I’m Waiting For The Man 3. The Riats: Run Run Run 4. The Riats: Sunday Morning 5. The Yardbirds: Smokestack Lightning/I’m Waiting For The Man
