Sad Movies: A Secret History of Neil Young, 1973-1980
I post a lot of Neil Young rarity-type stuff here, but believe me, this one is IMPORTANT. Since the second volume of Neil’s Archives series is probably at least a year away, I put together a little comp of unreleased material covering the post-Harvest years of the 1970s. If you’re familiar with his career, you’ll know that these are the peak years! The years where Young stood taller than pretty much any of his peers. The years where masterpieces flowed like water from a tap. The years where the dude had so many great songs that many never made it onto official records. Those lost songs are mainly what we’ve got here today, though I included some favorite re-arranged/re-imagined songs, as well as just some fantastic performances. I also stayed away from Chrome Dreams songs (for the most part) since everyone should already have that. The resulting 90 minutes or so (featuring appearances by the Stray Gators, CSN, the Santa Monica Flyers, Crazy Horse, the Ducks, Devo and more) is a hell of a listen, and should get anyone with a pulse excited about the forthcoming Archives box that will cover all of these songs and more (hopefully). Buckle yourself in and get ready for a ride on the Human Highway! The tracklisting:
