200 Years
A dusky, quietly dazzling record of (mostly) acoustic psych-folk from the minds behind Magik Markers and Six Organs of Admittance. The spindly, intricate fingerpickings of Six Organs’ Ben Chasny will come as no surprise to his fans. The real surprise is how Magik Markers’ Elisa Ambrogio fully inhabits the role of a folky chanteuse, something her noisier regular band only hints at. It suits her quite well — Ambrogio’s melancholy vocals are upfront and reverb-less, enhancing the intimate, un-cluttered nature of the tunes. Chasny, meanwhile, reins in some of his more indulgent tendencies, preferring for the most part to add only the sparest of overdubs to his acoustic guitar. 200 Years’ debut might not grab you immediately, but let it sink and work its charms. An excellent companion Six Organs’ Asleep On The Floodplain, released earlier this year.
