Beyond the Fringe of Audience Comprehension
Rock Follies continues at Not Coming to A Theater Near You. Head over here to read David Carter’s review of Frank Zappa’s truly terrifying 200 Motels.
My friends and I rented a VHS copy of 200 Motels when we were 14 or 15, thinking it was going to be the trippiest, most psychedelic movie of all time. And it kind of was — in a pretty unpleasant way. I’m actually a little scared to revisit it. But the music is solid. What we’ve got here for you today are outtakes from those sessions, including “What Kind of Girl Do You Think We Are,” “Daddy Daddy Daddy” and the deathless “Magic Fingers,” a song that my high school garage band did a pretty ripping version of. Wacky vocalists Flo & Eddie kind of take center stage here. These songs all come from a massive 10-LP Zappa bootleg box set called The Mystery Box, which I don’t own. I’m sure I’ll get around to it some day. Hey, I’m planning on living a long life.
