ROCK ROCK ROCK
In honor of the return of Neil Young & Crazy Horse next week (listen to Americana here), here’s a look at one of the stranger episodes in the Horse’s long life. In the summer of 1984, the band played a series of hometown shows at Santa Cruz’s venerable Catalyst club, mixing the hits with a bunch of new songs. These were Neil’s first shows with Crazy Horse since the legendary Rust Never Sleeps tour in 1978, and I’m sure everyone got excited about a forthcoming album featuring these new tunes. It wasn’t to be! Though they went into the studio, none of the recordings were ever released — apparently the Horse simply wasn’t capable of translating the sound Neil was hearing in his head. And perhaps with good reason — some of these new songs are pretty weird. The kooky, atonal synths of “I Got A Problem”! The honking-down-the-highway boneheadedness of “Rock Rock Rock”! The almost thrash-metal of “So Tired”! Some of them would show up on subsequent releases, but some will have to wait for Archives, Vol. 27. So dig this live show! Not sure if there are “lost classics” contained therein, but it’s a show that is definitely interesting to hear. Rock forever!
