We rehearsed for hours. You probably couldn’t find a band that rehearsed more than we did, but we always fell apart. - Gina Birch
The Raincoats might not have been the tightest live band in their formative years, but as this audience tape recorded in London in May of 1979 shows, they sure were exciting. Seemingly on the verge of utter chaos, the quartet’s 40-minute set is nonetheless a complete success. The Raincoats rock! Maybe not in exactly the way that we’ve come to understand the word “rock,” but in a fresh and totally fun way. A new language! More than three decades later, the buzz of this band comes through loud and clear. They must not have sounded like anyone else at the time, and they barely sound like anyone else since. It’s obvious that the crowd digs it, too — the band is practically dragged back onstage for an encore. Not knowing anymore tunes, in typical ramshackle fashion, they do a repeat performance of “No Looking.” Falling apart never sounded so good.
