Grateful Dead - Universal Amphitheatre, Los Angeles, CA, June 30, 1973
Show #8 in my Summer of Dead live archive journey! The hits keep on coming. This is a nice, warm audience tape of a solid, soulful show. While not as pristine as the SBDs, the recording has a very cool “YOU ARE THERE” ambiance. Ballads are especially good here — the morphine-drip crawl of “Stella Blue” is a trip, as is “Row Jimmy.” And though I’m not crazy about the lyrics of “Eyes of the World,” the jamming is inspired.
Choice Cut: “Bird Song” soars, appropriately.
