Grateful Dead - Springfield Civic Center Arena, Springfield, MA, April 23, 1977
And we’re back with show #12 in the Summer of Dead! The Cornell show from a few weeks later is rightly praised as a high point in the GD’s live career, but I wanted to check out a show I hadn’t heard before. This one is pretty close to the equal of Cornell, I’d say! Similar setlist, similar good vibes. The disco beats remain (bizarrely, they show up on “My Uncle”), and it’s clear the band (or at least the rhythm section) has been listening to some reggae on the tour bus. Low point is the fairly pointless Stones cover, but otherwise, the whole thing is stellar — the awe-inspiring “Scarlet Begonias > Fire On The Mountain” sequence, a wonderful “Bertha,” and a lovely “Cassidy.”
Choice cut: The “Help Is On The Way > Slipknot > Franklin’s Tower” segment of the show is outta sight, with some exploratory wah guitar /synth battles happening. Roll away the dew!
