Grateful Dead - Red Rocks Amphitheatre, Morrison, CO, July 8, 1978
Lucky 13 in the Summer of Dead live archive journey through the past. Since I call Colorado home, it’s only right that sooner or later in this trip I check out a Red Rocks show. Yes, according to my sources, NBA star/Dead Freak Bill Walton, pictured above with the Kreutzmann Family, attended this set, which took place almost exactly 34 years ago. The photo is black and white, but trust me, those rocks are red. The Dead responded to the glorious natural setting with a friendly show — it doesn’t quite lift off into the Colorado sky, but it’s a good listen nonetheless.
Choice cut: It’s kind of a mess, but totally fun — the Dead take on Zevon’s “Werewolves of London” at the end of this show. The song was only a couple months old at this point, but I guess the band knew a classic when they heard it. Love hearing Jerry exhort Weir to “draw blood!” on his slide solo.
