Laetitia Sadier - Silencio
Anyone expecting Laetitia Sadier’s solo career to be a radical departure from her work with Stereolab will be disappointed. But the rest of us won’t care. While the apple doesn’t fall very far from the tree on her second LP, Silencio is a welcome offering to ‘Lab fans who got used to that band’s steady stream of great music over the course of almost two decades. And there are certainly a few differences — a little more space, a little more jangle, not quite as many ideas competing for attention. The songs have room to breathe. Sadier’s excellent debut, The Trip, saw her dealing with more personal topics, looking more inward than outward. Silencio fixes its gaze back on the world at large. “We want a real democracy!” she demands on “Auscultation to the Nation.” But these outspoken, often angry political lyrics bump up against breezily beautiful melodies. A highlight is “Fragment pour le future de l’homme” which features Sadier’s elegant voice floating over a backing track that could be an outtake from the Remain In Light sessions. ”Find Me The Pulse of the Universe” is another winner, with a sun-kissed bossa nova beat and lovely male/female vocals. Radical politics never sounded so groovy.
