Memo From Jagger
Hey you again! Since we’re talking about Rock Follies, here’s a bootleg compilation I cooked up the first time around to accompany this review of Jean-Luc’s Sympathy For The Devil. That’s right, I’m on a first name basis with him. Here’s what I wrote all those years ago:
After the Peppery psychedelic excesses of Their Satanic Majesties Request, the Rolling Stones’ Beggars Banquet has become known as a “back to roots” effort. And in some ways, that’s true — the album is largely folk/blues/country-based, but it’s also as self-conscious and arty as anything the Stones had done up to that point. Makes sense, then, that they hired Godard to document the sessions. What I’ve got for your downloading pleasure today is a homemade comp mostly drawing from those sessions, but also incorporating various tracks from the same 1968-69 era. Lots of alternate mixes/instrumentals/stray tracks + guest spots from the likes of Ry Cooder and Marianne Faithfull. I think it makes for a nice listen: Black Mass blues, junkie psychodramas, sardonic country rock, and some just plain killer rock ‘n’ roll.
1. Sympathy for the Devil (rehearsal #1)2. Jumping Jack Flash (instr.)3. Family (outtake)4. Natural Magic (outtake)5. Memo From Turner (single mix)6. No Expectations (single mix7. Jigsaw Puzzle (instr.)8. Dead Doctor (alternate version)9. Street Fighting Man (alternate version)10. I’m A Country Boy (instr.)11. Prodigal Son (live)12. You Gotta Move (live)13. Child of the Moon (instr.) 14. Sister Morphine (Marianne Faithfull vocal)15. Jumping Jack Flash (alternate version)16. Sympathy for the Devil (rehearsal #2)
