Citizen Kane Jr. Blues
A friend asked for a repost of this show, so here it is for the rest of y’all. I feel some sort of missionary zeal for spreading the word about this one. The pic here is either before or after the show, as Neil enjoys a cocktail with Leon Redbone and John Hammond Jr. Here’s what I wrote about it way back when:
First post! Appropriately, this is one of the first bootlegs I ever heard, I think, and it is a doozy. My older brother bought it in Santa Monica, I think — a brown-covered double vinyl set entitled “Mr. Young.” Or something like that. Anyway, it is at least partly responsible for my obsession with tracking down the illicit live recordings that will be featured on this blog. Recorded May 16, 1974 at the Bottom Line in NYC, it was a surprise appearance for Neil after a Leon Redbone/Ry Cooder gig. He took the opportunity to premiere a bunch of tracks from the then-unreleased On The Beach album, as well as some songs that remain unreleased to this day — the opening “Pushed It Over The End (Citizen Kane Jr. Blues)” and a re-written “Greensleeves.” There’s also a bunch of super mellow chats with the audience, including Neil’s step by step instructions on how to make Honey Slides, a marijuana-based concoction I’ve yet to try. Some day. Anyway! Enjoy this recording — it’s about as good as it gets.
