NYMPH - New Millennium Prayer
Four extended tracks of ecstatic world-psych, NYMPH’s massive New Millennium Prayer finds the fertile common ground between free jazz, trance rock and the vast international pop landscape. Don Cherry, the pioneer who spent much of his career exploring similar terrain, would be proud. The seven-piece collective throws a whole lot against the wall and somehow makes it stick — vocalist Eri Shoji’s strangely bewitching yelps, horn blasts worthy of Albert Ayler, and guitarist Matty McDermott’s pulsing, infectious riffs. Underneath it all, the grooving rhythm section makes sure that virtually the entire LP remains positively danceable even during its most “out” moments. This Prayer certainly isn’t about getting down on your knees.
