I Got A Message For You
A kind soul recently donated a hefty stack of Robyn Hitchcock bootlegs to Doom & Gloom, so consider this the first salvo in an ongoing series of posts. These two fab solo sets were recorded in the long-ago summer of 1987 at McCabe’s Guitar Shop in Santa Monica, CA, a great venue that I’d later see Robyn at several times in the mid-90s. There are some repetitions in the late and early show setlists, but I think they’re both worth hearing. Lots of great stuff here, including a bunch of songs that don’t get played much anymore — “Insect Mother,” “The Man Who Invented Himself,” “The President,” and others. There’s even one song that, to my knowledge, Robyn has never released officially, even after his copious, outtake-laden reissue campaigns. It’s called “The Angel Upstairs” and it’s quite lovely. There’s also a totally improvised tune (about Donna Summers, naturally), an offbeat Dylan cover and plenty of Hitchcock’s signature surrealist banter.
