Living In Paradise
Might be a little bit hard to tell from the pixel-y pic above, but over on the left is none other than young Declan MacManus, who a few years after this woodsy trip, would enjoy enduring fame and fortune as Elvis Costello. A noted pub rock aficionado passed along these recordings made by his band, Flip City, circa 1974-75. They’ve been bootlegged for years, but even the archive-happy Costello hasn’t deigned them worthy of official release. A bit of a surprise — they’re pretty solid, and really not too far from My Aim Is True. The missing ingredient, naturally, is punk — but Declan still sounds pretty nervy here. The influences lean heavily in the direction of The Band and Van Morrison, making me think that in an alternate universe Costello could’ve become something akin to a UK Bruce Springsteen? Maybe? Maybe not. Anyway, this is worth your time — and the perfect way to celebrate the King of America’s 57th birthday! Have a good one, bro.
