You Know When You Grope For Luna
[Old man voice]: A lot of you kids out there might be too young to remember the days before the Pixies were a semi-regular fixture on the touring circuit, but believe me — there was a time when them getting back together seemed as unlikely as, say, a Husker Du reunion. Despite occasional talk of new material, the Pixies are fully a nostalgia act in the 00s, which is cool: the songs still sound great and these dudes deserve a pay day. But they were once an astonishingly creative act — their output in just six or seven years of existence can rival the output of any major band you’d care to name. This live set I’ve got from you here, recorded off Swiss radio in the summer of 1991, comes from towards the end of their original run, and features a setlist stuffed with highlights from all of their albums. It’s a killer show, perhaps my favorite Pixies boot. Listening now, I’m especially impressed with just how powerful a vocalist Black Francis is/was, leaping from harrowing screeches to sweet falsettos, from Mark E. Smith-style barks to Neil Young-ish croons. I’m not sure who else was capable of this kind of thing — David Byrne? David Thomas? Someone named David, anyway. Long live the Pixies! Death to the Pixies!
